Dussehra 2026 Outfit Guide: What to Wear on 20 October

Dussehra 2026 falls on 20 October, the day after Navratri's ninth night, though some Bengali panjikas place Vijayadashami on 21 October — check the calendar your family follows before you fix anything. What to wear depends almost entirely on which Dussehra you are celebrating: an Ayudha Puja morning at home, a Bijoya Dashami with sindoor khela, an apta-leaf exchange in Maharashtra, or a Ravan dahan in a dusty maidan after dark. This Dussehra outfit guide splits it by what you are actually doing that day, because those four occasions have almost nothing in common except the date.

Dussehra 2026: the day in context

Sharad Navratri runs 11–19 October 2026, ending on Navami with peacock green as the ninth day's colour. Dussehra follows on 20 October. It sits at the tail of the festival stretch and just ahead of Sharad Purnima on 26 October and Karva Chauth on 29 October, which is why so much of the season's shopping and stitching gets compressed into these two weeks.

Dussehra is also widely treated as one of the most auspicious days of the year for beginnings — a new venture, a new vehicle, a child's first lesson. That is why the day skews towards new clothes rather than best clothes, and why the outfit is expected to look fresh rather than elaborate.

What is worn, region by region

Region What happens on the day Typical dress Practical note
North India Ramlila concludes; Ravan dahan in the evening Bright kurta sets, sarees, festive suits Evening is outdoors, dusty and crowded — plan for standing
Bengal Bijoya Dashami, sindoor khela, immersion Red-bordered white sarees; red and white throughout Sindoor will mark the fabric; do not wear an heirloom silk
Maharashtra Seemollanghan and the exchange of apta leaves as "gold" Gold, yellow and marigold tones; nauvari in traditional homes Lots of visiting between homes; comfort over weight
Karnataka Mysuru Dasara culminates in the Jamboo Savari procession Silk sarees, traditional dress for temple visits Long hours out; carry a second lighter option
Tamil Nadu, Andhra, Telangana Ayudha Puja and Saraswati Puja; tools and books are honoured Traditional silk, pattu pavadai for children Turmeric, kumkum and oil are handled — keep light colours away
Kerala Vidyarambham — children begin learning Cream and gold, off-white with a coloured border Morning ritual; simple and understated is correct
Gujarat Garba has ended; the day is quieter and food-led Everyday festive rather than the chaniya choli of Navratri The heavy outfits came out during the nine nights, not now

Colour conventions on Dussehra

Unlike the nine nights of Navratri, Dussehra has no single assigned colour. What it has are strong regional tendencies. Gold and yellow dominate in Maharashtra because of the apta-leaf-as-gold custom. Red and white hold in Bengal for Dashami. Marigold orange reads correctly almost everywhere, because it is the colour of the flowers already at every doorway. Cream and off-white with a coloured border is the safe temple-morning choice across the South.

The one colour most families avoid on a festival morning is black, particularly for puja or a ritual first lesson. Evening outings are treated far more freely, and a dark outfit for Ravan dahan raises no eyebrows.

Day to evening, without changing twice

The awkward part of 20 October is that the morning is a ritual and the evening is a crowd. A morning puja rewards a lighter, plainer, more traditional outfit. Ravan dahan rewards something you can stand in for two hours in the dust, near fireworks, with no place to sit. Most people do not have time to go home and change between the two.

Morning (puja, Ayudha Puja, Vidyarambham) Evening (Ravan dahan, visiting, dinner)
Base Cotton or a light silk saree; a simple kurta set Same base, restyled
What changes Minimal jewellery, hair tied, no dupatta drama Add a worked dupatta, statement earrings, a jacket or shrug
Fabric to favour Breathable — cotton, soft silk, light georgette Anything that resists dust and does not crease
Fabric to avoid Anything that shows turmeric and oil marks Sheer or loosely draped ends near fireworks and flame
Footwear Slip-on, since shoes come off at the puja Closed and broken in; the ground is uneven and dark

The cleanest version of this trick is a plain saree or a plain co-ord in the morning, with a sheer organza dupatta added in the evening — it changes the whole silhouette, weighs nothing and folds into a bag. For anyone who would rather not manage a drape across a twelve-hour day, a stitched co-ord set does the same job with none of the re-pleating.

For men

A kurta in a solid festive shade with churidar or straight pants covers both halves of the day. Cotton for the morning puja; something with a little more sheen for the evening. If you are attending a Ravan dahan, avoid loose, floaty synthetic layers — sparks travel further than people expect at an effigy burning. Menswear for this day is best kept simple; the day is not the occasion for a sherwani unless there is a wedding attached.

Buying and stitching timelines

If you are having something stitched for 20 October, the fabric needs to be with the tailor by the first week of the month at the latest. October is the single busiest stretch of the year for tailors in most Indian cities, and turnaround times that are three days in July become two weeks in October. Fabric here is cut to order from 0.8m to 5.5m, so order the blouse length, the kurta length and the dupatta length together rather than in two rounds — a second order will come from a different cut and, in prints and dyed lots, may not match exactly. Orders above ₹999 ship free within India.

If you are buying a ready saree instead, the same buffer logic applies for a different reason: anything that arrives damaged, defective or incorrect needs to be reported within 7 days of delivery, and you want that window to open well before the date, not on it.

FAQ

Is Dussehra 2026 on 20 or 21 October?

Most calendars place Vijayadashami on 20 October 2026. Some Bengali panjikas place it on 21 October. The two traditions genuinely differ in some years, so follow the panjika or panchang your family uses, especially if you are planning sindoor khela or a Bijoya gathering around it.

Should I wear the Navratri day-nine colour on Dussehra?

No. The nine daily colours belong to Navratri itself, and peacock green is the colour for 19 October, not 20 October. Dussehra has no assigned colour of its own — regional convention takes over instead.

Can I wear a heavy silk saree to Ravan dahan?

You can, but it is rarely worth it. The venue is usually an open ground, the crowd is dense, the dust settles on everything and there are fireworks. A saree you can wash without anxiety serves the evening better than one that needs dry cleaning afterwards.

What do children wear on Vijayadashami?

For Vidyarambham and temple visits, simple and traditional is the norm — cream or off-white with a coloured border, or a pattu pavadai in the South. Comfort matters more than finery, because children in ritual settings are usually seated on the floor for a while.

How much fabric should I buy for a kurta set?

It depends on the width, so check the product page before ordering. At 44-inch width a straight kurta commonly needs somewhere around 2.5m and matching bottoms roughly the same again, while 58–60 inch fabric needs less. Ask your tailor for their exact requirement first, and add a little for shrinkage if the fabric is cotton or linen.
